Services Provided by Podiatrists

Podiatry involves dealing with a multitude of possible problems people have with their feet and ankles. These can range from ingrown toenails to abnormal foot structures. Among the problems that a podiatrist handles are biomechanical and gait issues, including those involving children who may have congenital or developmental foot maladies. Another important podiatric service designed to correct various foot abnormalities is prescribing custom orthotic devices. Some are made for comfort and support while others can correct specific conditions, such as overpronation or flat feet. A  podiatrist is an expert in managing the side effects of diabetes, especially dealing with foot ulcers and their maintenance and treatment. Podiatrists are also educated and trained to deal with more routine ailments, such as corns on the feet, blisters that have become infected, athlete’s foot and other fungal infections. In some cases, a podiatrist may be called on to perform surgery, including toenail removal or a bunionectomy. Podiatrists can also recommend appropriate footwear as well as provide guidance on exercises to stretch and strengthen the feet. For help with any foot problems, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and options for treatment.

If you are dealing with pain in your feet and ankles, you may want to seek help from a podiatrist. Feel free to contact Tanya R. Sellers-Hannibal, DPM from Maryland. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Impact of Aging on the Feet

Aging takes a toll on the body, including the feet. Given all that the feet do for us in our lifetimes and what they endure, it is no surprise that problems occur. From general wear and tear to structural changes, several factors contribute to the impact of aging on our feet. The natural slowdown of cell turnover and collagen production can result in thinner skin, including the fatty layer that provides cushioning on the soles and heels of the feet, which can make walking and standing uncomfortable. The erosion of cartilage between joints and inflammation of the bursa and tendons increases with age, and this can cause reduced flexibility in the feet and discomfort. Various types of arthritis can affect the joints, bones, and tendons in the feet, toes, and ankles, causing pain and stiffness. Dry skin, particularly on the soles of their feet can lead to cracked heels and calluses. Hormonal changes related to aging can cause toenails to thicken and become brittle, making them harder to maintain and increasing the risk of nail-related problems. Furthermore, circulation problems become more common as we age. Edema, characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the feet and ankles, may occur due to compromised blood circulation. This can lead to discomfort, swelling, and a higher susceptibility to infections. To deal with age-related foot issues, it is suggested that seniors visit a podiatrist as part of their healthcare routine. A podiatrist can examine the feet, identify issues, and provide appropriate treatment and guidance for maintaining foot health.

If you need your feet checked, contact Tanya R. Sellers-Hannibal, DPM of Maryland. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and provide you with quality treatment.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.

Common Causes of Foot Pain

Nearly everyone experiences foot pain at some point in life, and the number of causes is enormous. Foot pain may be caused simply by the way you walk, the way your feet are structured, or the shoes you wear. It can be a result of overuse in a sports-related activity or from landing wrong when you jump. Having either flat feet or high arches are other potential causes of foot pain. Corns on the feet, usually from friction with the inside of the shoes you wear, and calluses that result from other foot problems are common causes. A bone deformity, such as bunions or hammertoes, may affect your gait and cause pain in the joints of the toes and the ball of the foot. Wearing high heels or shoes with a narrow toe box can cause pain in the ball of the foot as a result of a shift in body weight. Overtraining, common among runners, can result in tears in ligaments, especially the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot. If you are experiencing foot pain and are unsure of the cause, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who can examine your feet, diagnose the cause, and suggest treatment options.

Heel Bruises

When a heel becomes injured, it is common for it to look bruised and swollen. This can happen from overuse or from participating in high-impact sports, and it can be painful. Resting the affected foot can often help, in addition to making sure to wear shoes that fit well. It is important to ensure that shoes have enough room in the heel area to avoid excessive pressure, and it is beneficial to wear shoes that are appropriate for the activity being done. Using shoe inserts can provide extra support to cushion the sore heel, and wearing shoes with a low heel can shift the foot forward onto the ball of the foot. This is often effective in taking the pressure off the heel. If it is not possible to stay off the feet for the time required for healing, using crutches or a knee scooter can help with mobility without putting excess weight on the foot. Because there are so many reasons a heel can become bruised, it is important to be aware if the bruise worsens. If you have heel pain, it is suggested that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can examine your foot and administer proper treatment.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Tanya R. Sellers-Hannibal, DPM of Maryland. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
